Los Angeles Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association

Protect the VA Parkinson's Centers.

Take Action!

Contact your Senator and ask them to co-sponsor S. 1537

We need your help in securing Senate cosponsors of S. 1537, which would protect the Parkinson's Disease Research Education and Clinical Centers (PADRECCs) and Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence (MSCoEs) at the Veteran's Administration.

The PADRECCs have been in existence for five years and are funded at the discretion of the Veterans Administration. They are not mandated by Congress in the VA budget or otherwise by statute. However, there are indications that the PADRECCs may be in danger of losing their funding and will have to close their doors. The only way to ensure that this will not happen is by enacting legislation.

S. 1537, introduced by Sen. Akaka, would help protect the PADRECCs and MSCoEs by formally establishing the Centers, for the first time, through Congressional action. The bill is expected to be considered by the Senate as early as mid-June. Last summer, the House of Representatives passed similar legislation introduced by Rep. Lane Evans.

In order to protect this important program, we are seeking Senate cosponsors, passage, and enactment of S. 1537 to ensure the quality care, research, and services provided by the PADRECCs continues.

Your Senators' support for S. 1537 will ensure that Parkinson's Disease Research Education and Clinical Centers will continue to provide clinical care and outreach to our veterans while conducting research that will benefit all Americans with Parkinson's disease.
