Craft union members working at the LAUSD project on the site of the former Ambassador Hotel joined LAUSD officials and the project's construction team on Nov. 21 to celebrate the topping off of the project's high school. "Topping off" is the term used by Ironworkers to indicate that the final piece of steel, decorated with an evergreen tree and signed by the Ironworker crew, is being hoisted into place on a building, bridge, or other large structure to mark the project reaching its maximum height. All craftsmen and women on the project were treated to a lunch before the final beams were hoisted into place. The Ambassador Hotel was a historical landmark in Los Angeles.

Unlike many of the craft-union members of the Building Trades, UA 250's HVAC Technicians often work alone. However, the jobs they perform are of critical importance to the customers they serve. The UA 250 HVAC Technicians working for Linc Services perform "mission critical" service and maintenance at the Orange County Register to ensure that the daily newspaper keeps humming along.

With only 600 members, Heat and Frost Insulators Local 16 covers all of Northern California and Northwestern Nevada, with an 85 percent unionization rate for commercial and industrial construction. Their work is critical and highly skilled. Insulators Local 16 members work on projects ranging from nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, oil refineries, and food processing plants, to high-rise office buildings, power plants, hospitals, and schools. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, Hollywood

This month, Building Trades News visited members of Cement Masons Local 600 working at Madame Tussauds wax museum being constructed next to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The 44,274 sq.-ft. building will rise three stories above ground and will also include two levels of below-ground parking. The project is being built on the site of a former parking lot on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Orange Ave.
